about

This 3 track E.P. was the debut release for Penny Ikinger. It features 3 songs Kathleen, Sponge Diver & Maid of Orleans that make up a song cycle based on ancient folk structures and images of women in myth, backed by a landscape of distorted harmonics wrenched from Ikinger's very electric guitar.

Penny Ikinger has played guitar with some of Australia's foremost rock acts and this is her first foray into the world of songwriting. The results are astounding - like Nancy Sinatra fronting the Velvet Underground at a deserted seaside carnival.

REVIEWS:

“Combining a dangerously seductive voice with a guitar she makes sound so alive it breathes, Ikinger eschews the predictable in favour an enchanting uncertainty” Fred E Gostein, City Search, 30th Oct 2001

“A voice of aching pleasure coming through her liquid guitar and wanting to be drawn closer to it”. Ross Clelland, Drum Media, 5th Nov 2001

“Deliciously skewed stuff…the surprises are consistently rewarding…Ikinger offers aural treats” Martin Jones, 5th Dec 2001

“Weaving together noise and narrative in the air in front of your eyes…like the best songwriters her songs are flights of the spirit and the imagination: word pictures; stories in sound…the instruments and vocals coalesce into a single harmonious whole” John McPharlin I-94 Bar, Nov 2001

“There is something a little bit dark…something mysterious, something eerie…three haunting, melodic and slightly medieval stories” Megan Wood, Revolcer, 5th Nov 2001

’Slow and inevitable, like sunrise on your execution day” John McPharlin, I-94 Bar, Nov 2001

“Ikinger is known for her unorthodox technique and distorted - at times abrasive - sound but (here) she reveals a softer side…” Nick Ollie, Wentworth Courier, 7th Nov 2001
